Early 1900 Art Deco Hallmarks

Art Deco flourished as a design principle throughout the first half of the 20th century. Art Deco hallmarks can be found all throughout the world. However, the majority are located in North America and Europe. It originated in France in the 1920s and is characterized by its rigid linearity and geometric symmetry.
  1. Europe

    • Some major European Art Deco buildings are located in France and Belgium. The Belvédère du Rayon Vert is a hotel located in Cerbere, in Southern France. The hotel was built to resemble the structure of a ship and contains a tennis court on its roof. The Center of Fine Arts is a major Art Deco structure located in Brussels. It was designed by the Belgian architect Victor Horta and took nearly a decade to complete.

    Latin America

    • A major Art Deco building of Latin America is the Kavanagh building, which is a skyscraper located in Buenos Aires. It contains 29 floors and was completed in 1936. The Normandie Hotel is located in San Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico. It was completed in 1939 and is listed as a national historic site in the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Like the Belvédère du Rayon Vert, it is likewise modeled after the structure of a ship.

    North America

    • One of the most iconic Art Deco buildings in the United States is the Chrysler Building, which is located in New York. At the time of its completion in 1930, it was the tallest building in the world at 1,050 feet. College Park is a department store located in Toronto that was also completed in 1930. Many of the buildings in the Mexico City neighborhood of La Condesa were constructed in the Art Deco style of the early 20th century.

    Asia

    • Both the Park Hotel and the Peace Hotel are Art Deco hotels located in Shanghai. The former was completed in 1934 and designed by the Slovakian architect Ladislav Hudec. The Peace Hotel was completed in 1929 and overlooks the Huangpu River. Manila, the capital of the Philippines, is the site of the Manila Metropolitan Theater, which was completed in 1931 and features a number of sculptures on its exterior.
