Transitional period between early renaissance and Baroque?

The transitional period between the Early Renaissance and the Baroque is known as Mannerism. It emerged in the late 15th century and prevailed in Italy until the late 16th century. Mannerism was a reaction against the classical ideals of the High Renaissance and was characterized by its use of elongated figures, distorted anatomy, and complex compositions. Some notable Mannerist artists include Pontormo, Bronzino, and Parmigianino.
