The Definition of Wall Painting

In fine art, a wall painting is any painting that is created on a wall. Wall paintings can also be called murals.

    • Wall paintings can be traced as far back as prehistoric times and are used through the modern day.

    Significance

    • Historically, some of the most famous works of western and eastern art are wall paintings. In the present day, wall painting is also done upon the walls of private residences or businesses.

    Function

    • In its modern function, wall paintings are used to decorate a space or convey an artist's message. Throughout their history, murals have also been used for religious contemplation, acts of devotion, signs of protest and means of instruction.

    Types

    • Fresco is a type of wall painting that involves the application of pigments to wet plaster. Other methods of mural-making include tempera, spray paint, watercolor and acrylic paints; tile; and mixed media, including found objects and other materials.

    Famous Ties

    • Giotto, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael, Titian, Francisco Goya and Diego Ribera are all famous artists who employed wall painting as a medium during their careers.
