How to Use Acrylic Paint as a Glaze or Opaque Medium

Acrylic paint is a flexible water-based medium which can be manipulated to work just like oil paint without having to purchase additional chemicals to add to it. A wide variety of effects can be achieved quickly just from altering the amount of water used with the paint and the choices of application.

Instructions

  1. Manipulating Acrylic Paint

    • 1

Choose a color to start with for a base coat on your canvas. Squeeze out acrylic paint onto a palette. Using the spray bottle, mix water into the acrylic paint with the help of a palette knife, until the paint becomes a loose paste consistency, similar to pea soup.

    • 2

Brush on the liquefied paint as an under color or a base coat. Two to three layers may be used to reach a consistent opacity. Allow up to 15 minutes for each layer to dry completely. More layers can be painted to achieve a plastic feel on the surface of the painting.

    • 3

After the opaque layer is completely dry, glazing or washing can begin. Squeeze out a small amount of acrylic paint onto the palette. Spray water into the paint while mixing with a palette knife until the pigment becomes the consistency of water. Less pigment achieves a more transparent and elegant wash.

    • 4

Dip a soft brush into the liquefied paint and brush in a thin layer onto the opaque surface. Use a separate dry brush to blend out the glazing paint allowing for the opaque color to come through. A rag can also be used to blend out the wet paint, creating a misty effect.

    • 5

Allow 10-15 minutes between each layer of glazing for the paint to dry completely. Layer as many times as desired, always keeping the paint thin and blended allowing the base coat to show through.
