How to Thin Gel Medium

Acrylic paint gel mediums are often used to extend acrylic paints, as well as to change the viscosity of the paint. While some gels are made specifically to thin paint, they may not be thin enough for your purpose. Acrylic gel mediums can be thinned further with water or an acrylic paint thinner medium. Mixing water is typically discouraged for artistic purposes, because it can cause the paint to lose opacity and pigment.

Instructions

    • 1

Mix equal parts gel medium and thinner made specifically for water-soluble acrylic paints. Stir well with a palette brush, being sure to scrape the palette and mix in the portion that is on the bottom.

    • 2

Test the viscosity of the paint on scrap canvas or paper. If it is too thin, add a small amount of medium. If it is too thick, add a few more drops of thinner.

    • 3

Test again. Continue adding a small amount of medium or thinner until it has reached the desired consistency.

    • 4

Mix the thinned medium in a ratio of at least six parts medium to one part acrylic paint to keep the thin consistency.
