Parsons The New School for Design offers non-credit continuing education classes for students who want to learn the arts without working toward a degree. The school also offers undergraduate art programs in fine arts, illustration and art and design history and theory.
In the life drawing class, students learn elements of draftsmanship and work from a live model as well as study master drawings. Drawing I is a beginning class that teaches the basics of form, line and shading. There is some live model classes and students work mostly in charcoal. Drawing II is a little more advanced with the focus on composition and the study of art history. Painting I and II also incorporate art history as well as teach basic and advanced painting techniques.
The Cooper Union School of Art offers an undergraduate fine arts program with courses in art history, foundation studies and studio practice. The eight semester program is a total of 128 credits, which includes general academic electives and classes.
The Painting Techniques course explores the master techniques of oil painting and teaches how to apply these techniques in their present work. One assignment is to copy an old painting in hopes to better understand the materials and the technique. The school also offers Art History I, II and III as well as Introduction to Techniques, Painting and Advanced Painting courses.
NYU Steinhardt offers bachelor's and master's of fine arts degrees as well as minor degree programs in art studio. The undergraduate program is a combination of foundation courses, liberal arts classes and studio courses. Some course requirements are the History of Art Since 1945, the Fundamentals of Drawing and Sculpture I and II.
Both Introduction to Painting and Drawing I and II explore history and theory through studio practice. Lectures, museum and gallery visits are also part of the courses. Topics in Drawing: The Figure is another course where historic techniques are covered. It focuses on the use of the figure in art while exploring materials and attitudes. NYU also has Topics in Drawing, Painting and Sculpture courses where techniques and ideas are discussed to help students broaden their skills.
Located just outside of New York City, Bridgeview teaches drawing, painting and sculpture to both adults and children. The school's curriculum is based on old master techniques of European artists. Some of the courses it offers are Drawing and Painting from Observation, Beginner Drawing and Painting as well as Portrait & Figure Sculpture.
Special Techniques of Painting is an old masters course. The advanced class focuses on copying old paintings to better understand the concepts and techniques. Another course, Old Master Painting Techniques, explores old master techniques with oil and acrylic paints. Techniques such as glazing and underpainting are taught. Another classic approach to art is shown in the Portrait and Figure Sculpture course. Here students will learn about anatomy, proportions and balance.
