How to Paint Asian-Style Butterflies

Asian butterflies come in many different shapes, sizes, and colors. If you want to paint an Asian butterfly painting but feel that the feat may be overwhelming, have no fear. Butterflies are relatively simple creatures to paint, and present a simple and refined structure for practicing the poetic Asian minimalist style of painting. Before you begin your project, choose which Asian butterfly you would like to paint and have pictures on hand.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a reference picture for the Asian butterfly you would like to paint. The reference picture will help you to paint an accurate body and wing shape, select colors for the picture, and create accurate details such as wing pattern design.

    • 2

Draw a light outline of the butterfly on the sheet of watercolor paper, if desired. Because watercolor paints can be translucent, any dark lines will appear behind the paint.

    • 3

Dip the watercolor paintbrush in water. Load the paintbrush with black watercolor paint.

    • 4

Paint the outline of the butterfly wings, torso, and antennae using black watercolor paint. Use light, delicate brush strokes to create a feeling of lightness and mimic the Asian style of painting. Use the reference picture to help you mimic the shape of the butterfly.

    • 5

Rinse the watercolor paintbrush thoroughly under running water.

    • 6

Dip the watercolor brush into the cup of water. Load the paintbrush with the color of your choice. Apply color to the butterfly's wings and torso as desired. Do not paint the entire butterfly, but merely add accents of color.

    • 7

Clean the watercolor brush and load the paintbrush with a different color, if desired. Continue to add colors to the butterfly until you are satisfied with the picture.

    • 8

Allow the butterfly picture to dry completely before moving it.
