Do It Yourself Plaques

Plaques are a traditional and attractive way to display awards or certificates. Many plaques are given as part of the award itself. If you are a bit of a handyman and would like to save money, you may wish to put together your own plaques rather than pay a professional. Simple do-it-yourself plaque kits are available for this purpose.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the document to make sure it will fit the plaque properly. For example: If you are purchasing online, the product may be advertised as a do-it-yourself veneer plaque for 8-by-10. That means that it will fit a document that is exactly 8 inches by 10 inches.

    • 2

Decide on a color and style that will best suit the document and the person to be receiving it. For example: A walnut plaque would suit an office that has walnut shelving. Other popular colors are black granite, ebony and oak.

    • 3

Gather your materials. Lay the plaque on a towel in order to protect both the plaque and the table. Find the appropriate screwdriver required and carefully unscrew the four screws holding the clear acrylic to the plaque. Carefully remove the piece of acrylic.

    • 4

Before placing your document onto the plaque, be sure that the plaque and document are free from dust. If needed, gently clean the acrylic with an acrylic cleaner and a lint-free cloth. Place your document onto the face of the plaque, making sure it is aligned perfectly. Place the piece of acrylic on top of the document.

    • 5

Examine your plaque before replacing the screws to be sure there is no trapped dust or fingerprints between the document and the sheet of acrylic. Replace the screws, being careful not to over tighten them.

    • 6

Polish the plaque with a lint-free cloth.
