How to Make Dots With Acrylic Paint

Maybe you just need a couple of dots to represent eyes on a face or you want to paint in the style of an aboriginal dot painting. Creating dots with acrylic paint requires a steady hand and a keen eye. Unlike oil paint, acrylic paint is water-based which allows for a smoother application and easy blending. However, it dries quickly. Paint dots on your chosen medium using a few different techniques.

Instructions

Put the acrylic paint into a squeeze bottle. Slowly squeeze out a drop of paint for each dot you want to make. This will create more of a raised dot effect and will take longer to dry. If you want a wider dot, squeeze the paint slowly out onto your work surface until the dot is wide enough.

Use a round paintbrush, in a pointed style and dip it into the acrylic paint. Take the paint brush and touch it, as straight as you can to the medium. Pull the brush away quickly to create a dot on the canvas. For small dots, use a smaller round, pointed paintbrush.

Dip a cotton swab into the acrylic paint. Push the cotton swab onto the painting medium to create dots. Replace your cotton swab often because the fibers may stray from the tip and end up on your painting.
