TI-83 Graphing Art Projects

A TI-83 is a graphing calculator that creates extensive graphs using input equations as well as computes math and science equations. While the TI-83 can look intimidating, it also has fun and creative uses. So take your Texas Instruments graphing calculator in hand and inspire your students to create aesthetically pleasing works of art.
  1. Graph Drawing

    • Graph equations for several lines, semi-circles and diagonals with the TI-83. Transfer the approximate lines for each equation on a larger piece of paper with a pencil, a straightedge and a compass. Overlay lines on top of each other to create a visually appealing abstract design. Leave it in pencil or color in the lines with paint or colored pencil.

    Equations

    • Create equations that are solved with numbers the artist likes, such as birthdays, a lucky number, a jersey number, a time, a channel or an address. If the artist likes the number four, use an equation such as 2(2+6) - 12 = 4. Write these equations in pencil on a blank canvas in a repeating pattern until they cover the entire space. Color the equations with paint in one or more colors. Fill in the background with color or mathematical symbols.

    Constellations

    • Create a model constellation project with approximate distances. Constellations are imaginary images in the sky made up of different stars. While the stars are not evenly in line with each other, they would be if they were on a two-dimensional surface, the way they look to us. Find the approximate distance from each star as if they were on a two-dimensional surface and create a scaled model of the constellation using the proper equation and the TI-83. Draw the scaled model on paper and accent it with paint and glitter.

    Waves Sculptures

    • Waves such as sound waves are made from different frequencies. Use different equations to make waves on the TI-83. Transfer these images into three-dimensional sculptures with clay, glass or wood. Artists can choose frequencies or waves that have meaning to them. The final product may look abstract to an outsider, but an further insight would show the artist's personal attachment to the piece.
