The first successful use of steel in a suspension bridge was in 1818 when the Menai Suspension Bridge was built in Wales. Steel was used for the chain links because it was much stronger than iron and could support a greater weight load.
Railroad Tracks
The first steel rails were laid down in the 1850s. They were more durable than iron rails and could handle the heavier weight of locomotives and trains.
Buildings
Steel was increasingly used in the construction of buildings in the late 1800s. The Eiffel Tower, completed in 1889, is one of the most famous examples of the use of steel in architecture.
