Image Reproduction Techniques for the Yudu Screen Printing Machine

You can use different techniques on the Yudu screen printing system to create customized art prints, posters, cards, school projects, apparel or home decor items with reproductions of your favorite images. Before getting started, consult your owner's manual to familiarize yourself with the different parts of the machine. Keep the unit unplugged when it is not in use and never operate or store it near water.
  1. Creating Images

    • Create the image that you want to reproduce on your computer and save the file. Moisten your finger with water and stick it to both sides of the transparency sheet; the sticky side is the dull side used for printing. Separate colors into different layers for multicolor images and print the layers on separate transparency sheets using a standard inkjet printer. If you would prefer to reproduce a freehand design, draw the image directly onto the transparency sheet with ink.

    Preparing Screens

    • Identify the backside of your screen. This side is completely flush with the screen's metal edges and the front is lower than the metal edges. Wipe any dust, lint or oil from the back of the screen with a paper towel. Use a spray bottle to spray the back of the screen with water. Remove excess water from the front of the screen by running the squeegee over it. In a dimly lit room, remove the emulsion sheet from the black plastic bag. Apply the sticky side of the emulsion sheet to the backside of the screen. Run the squeegee over the shiny surface of the emulsion. Inspect the front of the screen for bubbles or dry spots that resemble spiderweb patterns. Lightly mist over any dry areas with the spray bottle. Squeegee both sides of the screen to remove excess water and dry the edges of the screen with a paper towel. Set the screen in the drying rack of the Yudu. Press down on the fan icon button. After the fan timer beeps, check the screen to make sure the emulsion has dried. If there is residual moisture, return the screen to the machine and repeat the fan cycle. Remove the plastic film from the emulsion.

    Exposing Screens

    • For multicolored images, press the light bulb icon button and set the first registration panel on the registration posts. Mount the first layer of the image to the registration panel with clear tape. Stack and tape any additional layers to additional registration panels, aligning the image as you stack the layers. Remove all of the registration panels aside from the initial panel you placed on the posts. For single color images, stick the transparency on the machine (printed side up) with clear tape. Place your screen on the registration posts with the emulsion side down. Place the platen foam down on the platen posts over the screen. Place a five-pound object on top of the platen. Use the up and down buttons on the timer to set the exposure time to eight minutes. Press the sun icon exposure button. After the timer beeps and the exposure light turns off, remove the weight, platen and screen from the device. Rinse both sides of the screen with cold water. Wait one minute and spray the screen with cold water to remove the emulsion. Use a lint-free towel to blot the screen dry. Place the screen in the drying rack and press the fan icon button. After the drying cycle is complete, check the screen to make sure it is completely dry. Multicolor images require the use of multiple screens for each layer and repetition of this process for each screen.

    Printing Screens

    • Insert the first screen onto the top lid over the registration posts (front side up). Tape the back of the screen to seal any open areas. Remove the protective sheet from the platen adhesive sheet. Mount the material you want to reproduce your image on over the platen. Open the lid and set the platen on the platen posts. Close the lid. Apply ink to the screen above your image in a line equivalent to the width of the image. Hold the lid open and pull your squeegee across the image to flood it with ink. Lower the lid and pull the squeegee down firmly over the design. Lift the lid and remove the screen. Wipe away excess ink and rinse the screen with water. For multicolor images, repeat the procedure with one screen per layer, allowing the image to dry between layers.
