How to Make a Kneaded Eraser Pointy

A kneaded eraser also bears the name "putty rubber" or "artist's putty" and is often gray, green or blue, though can come in any shade. It's a tool used primarily by artists and it functions by picking up particles of graphite from standard and colored pencils as well as charcoal. It's different from a typical eraser found on the end of pencils in that it doesn't leave behind debris and you can mold it to absolutely any shape you like. In that sense, it's comparable to clay except it doesn't dry out.

Instructions

    • 1

Roll and sculpt the kneaded eraser between your fingers, coaxing from a shapeless wad into a narrower, more sculpted piece of putty that resembles a small log.

    • 2

Hold the putty with your palms. Rub one end of the putty between two forefingers, sculpting the tip into a pointed shape. Repeat on the other end of the eraser.

    • 3

Press the first pointy end that you sculpted against a flat surface such as a work table, very lightly. Turn this pointy end slightly and press the other side of it against the table. Keep turning and pressing this pointy end until you refine your kneaded eraser into a pointy tip. Flip the eraser over and repeat on the other side.
