How to Make a Stomp Blending Stick

Blending sticks, stumps, stomps and tortillions are art supplies that help blend and create texture when drawing with charcoals, pastels or plain graphite pencil. Blending stomps are traditionally pointed on both ends and can be made with a variety of different papers in varying sizes and diameters. When making your own blending stomp, try several types of papers. Often, what works well for one piece of artwork will not always work well on another. If you make several stomps, you will be able to experiment with which tool works best for you.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure and cut paper scraps into rectangles that are roughly 3 inches by 6 inches.

    • 2

Cut one corner of your rectangle off so you are left with a triangular scrap of paper. Discard the triangle.

    • 3

Roll the rectangle at an angle. If you are rolling at the correct angle, the paper will begin to create a pointed end. This pointed end is crucial for the blending stomp. If you find that you are not rolling at enough of an angle or the paper is not creating a sharp enough point, unroll the rectangle and begin again.

    • 4

Secure the blending stomp with a piece of masking tape.

    • 5

Clean your blending stomp using a pink eraser when the tip gets dirty. Or, discard the stomp and create another.
