How to Clean Copper Plates for Etching With Acetic Acid

Cleaning copper plates with acetic acid before you etch them helps to brighten the appearance of the plates and gives them a thorough cleaning. When you prepare your plates with an acetic acid cleaning solution, it makes it easier for you to create the pattern you want as your etching medium will better adhere to the plates. So long as you dilute the acid properly and do not allow it to remain on the plates for too long, an acetic acid solution will not damage or etch the plates. Adding salt is also essential for effective copper plate cleaning.

Things You'll Need

  • Trisodium phosphate (TSP) or ecologically safe alternative product
  • Glacial (concentrated) acetic acid
  • Non-iodized table salt
  • Acid-resistant mixing vessel
  • Soft, dry cloth
  • Rubber gloves and eye protection

Instructions

    • 1

Degrease your plates as necessary with a solution of tri-sodium phosphate (if legally sold in your area) or an environmentally safe TSP substitute. Follow the directions on the package for degreasing metal surfaces or refer to your printmaking references or instruction manuals for information on degreasing.

    • 2

Mix one part of salt with eight parts of water in an acid-resistant vessel, such as a polyethylene garbage can large enough to dip your plates in.

    • 3

Add one part of acid to the salt water. Agitate the vessel to circulate the acid.

    • 4

Immerse your plates in the solution one by one and remove each one after a few seconds in the solution.

    • 5

Rinse each plate and dry it with a soft, clean cloth. You can now proceed to etch your plates.
