Measure one part wheat starch and four parts warm water into the saucepan. Mix the ingredients well and cover the saucepan. Allow the ingredients to sit for one hour.
Place the saucepan onto the stovetop and set the burner to medium. Cook and stir constantly with the wooden spoon for up to 30 minutes. When the mixture becomes translucent and thickened, take the saucepan from the burner.
Allow the saucepan to sit uncovered while the paste cools to room temperature.
Remove the paste you need to use immediately and pour the rest into the small jar. Cover the jar and place the jar in a cool and dark location. Keep the paste in the refrigerator for up to one week.
Pour the paste you are using right away through the strainer two times. Thin with additional water, if desired. Strain the stored paste in the same fashion prior to using it.
Monitor the paste you are storing and take care not to use paste that has turned rancid. The smell of the paste will change to an unpleasant odor and you may see mold on the surface of the paste. Discard if either of these things occurs.
