Permanent Marker Information

A permanent marker consists of a colorant, a solvent and a resin, and many types are available to suit your individual needs. Permanent markers have a wide variety of applications, including making artwork, crafting and writing on clothing.
  1. Identification

    • A permanent marker is one that is water resistant, adheres to most surfaces and uses dyes or pigments.

    Function

    • You can use a permanent marker to write on both rough and smooth surfaces when you wish to make a lasting mark.

    Types

    • Varieties of permanent marker include pens with both fine and thick points in a wide variety of colors.

    Time Frame

    • Marks made by a permanent marker may not last forever. According to the manufacturers of Sharpie pens, outdoor exposure can make a mark disappear in as little as three months.

    Warning

    • You may not be able to remove accidental marks, but there are a couple of methods to try. If the stain is on fabric, pre-treat the area with detergent, then soak in a mixture of color safe bleach and wash normally. On countertops and other smooth surfaces, use a cotton ball dipped in rubbing alcohol.
