How do I Frame Fabrics & Moulding?

Framing fabrics can help you creatively and inexpensively add bursts of color and texture to spruce up a room's decor. Choose fabrics based on color as well as texture. Use the decor or theme of the room as a guide. For example, create a vintage ambiance with an old tablecloth or a piece of lace. For a regal feel, a piece of purple silk will be suitable. Moldings are borders, sometimes in traditional frame shape and sometimes in custom shapes, that add dimension and focus to a decorative accent.

Instructions

    • 1

      Select the fabric.

    • 2

Measure the size of the frame as well as the size of the fabric. Mark the proportions on the back of the fabric, adding an extra inch to each side. Cut out the fabric.

    • 3

Measure a piece of cardboard to fit in the frame. Cut out the cardboard.

    • 4

Paint the front of the cardboard with glue. Carefully lay the glued side of the cardboard onto the back of the fabric. Flip it over and gently press down and smooth out the fabric.

    • 5

Tuck the excess edges over the back of the cardboard and glue down. Let the piece dry.

    • 6

Select a molding that fits within the frame and also suits the overall theme of the decor. For example, a formal or vintage piece may be in the shape of a cross shape, exposing the fabric only in the cross opening.

    • 7

Play with the colors in the molding. For example, if the fabric has gold threads in it, choose a molding with gold accents.

    • 8

Place the fabric-covered cardboard and the molding in the frame.
