How to Visit an Art History Museum

There is no better place in which to learn about the history of art than an art museum. Whether you are in Paris visiting the world-famous Louvre or at a small art gallery at your local university, you can learn so much about a time period or a culture by experiencing its art firsthand. Instructions

    • 1

Visit the art museum's website and print out its hours of operation. Look at the event calendar to make sure you will not be there on a day that it may be closing early for a special function. As you plan your museum visit, take into consideration that many museums are closed on Mondays.

    • 2

Take note of admission fees before you go to the art history museum. Some museums have free admission, but most situated in major cities charge a fee. Consider buying a multi-use pass or becoming a member of the museum to save money on subsequent visits.

    • 3

Print out a museum map or floor plan from the website, if possible. This can help you plan your day and know ahead of time what exhibits are current. It can also help you pique your children's or partner's interest.

    • 4

Rent an audio tour package at the museum. These are portable headsets that you wear as you visit the various exhibits. The audio tour gives you detailed explanations of the history of the artwork, short biographies of the artists and other information about the collections.

    • 5

Arrange to take a tour of the art museum that is guided by a docent. Some docent tours are on a walk-in basis at various times throughout the day, while others are by reservation only for large groups. Call ahead for information if you want someone to guide you and give you in-depth history of the artwork during your visit.

    • 6

Choose the exhibit you most want to see during your first self-guided tour. Take your time as you walk through the exhibit hall. Art museums are quiet, contemplative places in which you can appreciate the beauty of art without feeling hurried.

    • 7

Plan to visit the museum more than once in order to experience all the exhibits that pique your interest. Most art museums are vast, containing more than one person can see in a single day. Enjoy your time spent among the art and return another day to see more.
