How to Tour Iowa Casinos

If you're traveling to Iowa for a gambling vacation, Iowa's casinos are in one of two places--on the water or on Indian reservations. Locating a gambling experience shouldn't be hard since Iowa boasts 9 riverboat casinos and 7 other casinos on land.

Instructions

    • 1

Start the adventure on either the eastern or western side of the state. All but three of the casinos are located on Iowa's borders.

    • 2

Travel down the eastern border of Iowa along the Mississippi River to find several riverboat and reservation casinos.

    • 3

Visit riverboats like the Diamond Jo in Dubuque. The casino is operated on a three-story vessel. The Diamond Jo operates at dockside year round. It's open 8 a.m. to 3 a.m. during the week, and 24 hours on weekends.

    • 4

Enjoy a cruise and gamble at the same time. The Catfish Bend Casino in Fort Madison or Burlington is the real deal. The boat is docked in Burlington Mid-October through Mid-April, but in April it travels to Fort Madison where it cruises the Mississippi River from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. during the summer months.

    • 5

Gamble at one of Iowa's larger casinos, the Ameristar in Council Bluffs. The floating casino is open 24 hours a day. It has several restaurants and a large hotel located on site.

    • 6

Keep your feet on dry ground with a visit to Meskwaki Bingo and Casino in Tama. The large complex boasts thousands of slot machines, poker tables, restaurants, a motel and spa.

    • 7

Bet on the dogs while enjoying a trip to the casino in Altoona. The Prairie Meadows Racetrack offers live horse racing as well as gaming tables, slot machines, entertainment and restaurants.
