How to Make a Homemade Ice Sculpture

Ice sculptures can be used as centerpieces and conversation starters during parties and other events. Though impressive professional ice sculptures stand out, they tend to be expensive. Making a homemade ice sculpture is fun, affordable activity. Using varying ice sculpture molds, you can make several pieces for every table. When making homemade ice sculptures, you don't have to limit yourself to using plain water, but can experiment with different colors, glitter and embedded objects. Use distilled water instead of tap water to make the sculpture appear clearer.

Instructions

    • 1

Select where you will place the ice sculpture. This will help you come up with a design of appropriate size and shape.

    • 2

Make sketches of the ice sculpture you have in mind. These will serve as guides during the creation process.

    • 3

Clean your ice molds using mild soap and water. You can buy molds for this purpose, or use food containers, bread pans or bowls. The shapes you select should be suitable for the design you are using.

    • 4

Pour water into the ice molds or containers. If you want, add glitter or other embellishments to the water, or some food coloring if you want a colored homemade ice sculpture.

    • 5

Place the ice molds in the freezer. Keep them in the freezer for about two days or until the ice is completely frozen. If you are making a homemade ice sculpture during winter and the the outside temperature is below freezing, place the ice molds outside for about 48 hours.

    • 6

Remove the ice from the molds by running some water over them. You can also put them indoors in normal temperatures for a while to make it easy to remove them. When removing the ice, use much care and caution to prevent the ice from cracking.

    • 7

Assemble the pieces outside. Place one block of ice on top of another and rub some warm water around the spot where they combine. This will join the two ice blocks. Repeat this each time you add an ice block to your sculpture.

    • 8

Remove excess ice and carve some details into the sculpture using a chisel.

    • 9

Cover the ice sculpture using a plastic bag and place it in the freezer. Remove the sculpture when it is time to display it.
