Why is it hard on the actors to perform matinees Broadway?

Actors do not typically perform matinees on Broadway. It is standard practice for Broadway shows to have 8 performances per week, over six different days. Two performances are typically scheduled on Wednesdays and Saturdays, with no performances on Mondays.
