Were shakespeares plays staged in elaborate scenery?

Shakespeare's plays would have been staged with relatively minimal scenery by today's standards. While they did utilize props, like swords or furniture they did not construct elaborate sets with painted-on scenery. Most productions would include a few items to suggest the location while also allowing the acting and language to create the ambiance for the viewer.
