Why do people in Star Trek have different colors on their shirts?

In Star Trek, the colors of the shirts worn by the crew of the various starships and stations denote their division or department. The primary color divisions are:

Red: Command Division

Gold: Operations Division

Blue: Sciences Division

Green: Medical Division

Yellow: Engineering Division

Purple: Security Division

These colors are often combined with other colors to denote specific areas of specialization within a division. For example, in the Sciences Division, astrophysicists wear a light blue shirt, while biologists wear a dark blue shirt.

In addition to the primary color divisions, there are also a number of other colors that are used for specific roles or positions. These include:

White: Admirals and other high-ranking officers

Black: Special Forces and covert operations personnel

Gray: Civilian personnel and non-Starfleet personnel

The use of different colored shirts in Star Trek helps to create a visually appealing and distinctive appearance for the show, while also providing a way to quickly identify the role or division of a character.
