How to Build a Tiki Hut Prop

A tiki hut is a small shelter made out of bamboo and palm leaves. The size, shape and construction materials used vary from country to country depending on what is available. A full-size functioning tiki hut can be expensive and time consuming, but there are some short cuts that you can take to make a tiki hut prop which will offer the desired effect, but use a fraction of the materials and take much less time.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure and cut eight pieces of bamboo to the same length and arrange in two separate squares of the same size. Connect these squares together using twine or nails to form the top and bottom of the hut.

    • 2

Cut a further four pieces of bamboo to the same length to make the upright columns for the hut. Attach these at each corner of the two squares using twine or nails to create a box.

    • 3

Attach bamboo matting to the sides of the structure using a hammer and nails. A proper tiki hut uses bamboo canes to construct the entire structure, but this method is a lot cheaper and easier. Remember to leave a gap for the door by leaving an entire side uncovered or leaving a gap between the bamboo mats.

    • 4

Lay palm tree leaves across the roof to complete the hut. This may require the addition of some cross beams of bamboo to act as a roof, but this depends on the size of the leaves and the hut. You can use real or fake leaves but you may need to tie them down if you plan to move the tiki hut during performances.
