How did the globe theatre smell?

There were no seats in the pit at the Globe Theatre, and as the actors performed on a stage extended out into the pit, they were surrounded by some smelly spectators! These standing patrons were known as "groundlings" and were of the lower social classes. They would cheer, stamp their feet, throw things at the actors, or generally make a disturbance if they didn't like the performance. The groundlings were also not allowed to enter the theatre through the main doors of the theatre and were forced to enter by way of trap doors in the floor of the theatre. So, not only did they smell, but they came in through an entrance located right on top of the stinky latrine!
