Could women take part in greek theatres or attend plays?

Women were not permitted to take part in Greek theater or attend plays for the most part. Since only men were allowed to perform on stage, men would usually play female characters.

Women, however, were permitted to attend comedic performances. While they were not permitted to sit in the lower sections of the theater, women were allowed to observe from higher ground.
