What in Americas history was the play crucible based on?

The Crucible is a play by Arthur Miller, first produced in 1953. The play is set in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692 during the Salem witch trials. The play is based on the real-life events of the trials, in which over 200 people were accused of witchcraft and 30 were found guilty and executed.

Miller wrote the play as an allegory about McCarthyism, the anti-communist witch hunt that took place in the United States in the 1950s. Miller's play explores the themes of mass hysteria, guilt, and the dangers of blind accusations. The Crucible has been adapted into several films and television productions, and it is considered one of the most important works of American theater.
