Protect the performers' skin when applying stage makeup, to keep heavy makeup from damaging the skin under the hot lights. Make sure the performers' faces are completely clean, washed with a gentle cleanser. Before applying makeup, splash the face with cold water, and pat it dry. This closes the pores, which prevents makeup grease from getting into the skin. Use a facial moisturizer before applying the makeup so the makeup doesn't dry the face out. Always use new, quality products to avoid bacteria and negative reactions to stage makeup. To keep the makeup looking fresh, and to protect the skin, apply finishing powder frequently during the performance. This will absorb sweat and oils that could damage the skin.
If you are putting on a small performance and don't have the budget for expensive materials, prioritize your makeup investment so you only purchase essential items all the performers can use. If you are putting on a school performance, find out if the performers have any allergies to makeup products. Rather than investing in a large variety of colors, buy neutral colors that everyone can wear. This might include three to four different shades of foundation ranging from light to dark, black eyeliner pencils, two brown-based shades of blush, translucent finishing powder, three versatile eyeshadow colors (make taupe one of the colors), two to three shades of lipstick, Q-tips and makeup sponges. Make sure each cast member uses his own makeup sponge to avoid negative skin reactions.
When young children wear stage makeup, the goal is to make it look as if they are not wearing the makeup; in this case, avoid foundation. The sole purpose of makeup should be to counteract the effect of lights on the young child's skin, to avoid a washed-out look. If the child is under the age of 8, avoid mascara. Set the makeup with a light powder so it doesn't rub off when children wipe their noses. When applying makeup on older children and tweens, use foundation sparingly. Use eyeshadow that looks natural, and avoid harsh colors. Adults can use any type of quality makeup that fits the character.
