How to Set Up a Projected Backdrop in a Theater

Building sets for a theater production is rather expensive and time-consuming, not to mention it isn't always possible to create the scenery you desire (such as in a driving car). In order to help this, you may want to use rear projection. Rear projection comes from cinema and served as a way to produce material behind actors before the use of the green screen. It is possible to set up your own rear projection backdrop, without purchasing expensive projector screens (these often costs a few thousand dollars).

Instructions

    • 1

Find a cloth or other material that allows light to pass through (such as a sheet or thin, white blanket). You need some sort of material that catches the projected image and displays it on the other side.

    • 2

Hang the cloth from the curtain rod on the rear of the stage. Most theater stages have a rear curtain with additional floor space, allowing you to move around without walking completely behind the theater.

    • 3

Position the projector in the open area behind the curtain and aim it at the cloth. When you power on the projector, the images are produced on the cloth and seen on the other side of the stage.
