How to Look for Stage Props

Finding good props doesn't need to be a hassle for a show's stage manager. With a well-organized list of props prepared early in the show's production process, you can save precious money in your budget and precious time for everyone involved. While you'll probably have to hit prop or novelty stores for some items, you'd be surprised by some of the random objects your cast and crew have in a storage bin or a grandparent's attic. Draw on your cast and crew for show props.

Instructions

    • 1

Make thorough notes in the script of every prop that is required and compile a list.

    • 2

Leave space after each item on the list for the names of members of your cast and crew.

    • 3

Bring the list to a production meeting to find out who among the crew might be able to find each object.

    • 4

Bring the list to a table read to find out who among the cast might be able to find remaining objects.

    • 5

Visit flea markets and second-hand stores. Drive through residential neighborhoods on weekends looking for signs with directions to garage sales.

    • 6

Search the internet or your local Yellow Pages for novelty stores, costume shops and prop stores to find the remaining props that haven't been found yet.
