How to Direct Smoke From a Machine

Smoke machines are a great way to create fog and smoke for theatrical props in plays or other entertainment performances that add dramatic flare. However, sometimes the purpose of this prop may require a more precise flow of smoke to an area of the space you need to fill. There is a simple way to direct the smoke exactly where you want it so the show can go on.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the area or areas where the smoke dispenses out from the smoke machine. Sometimes the smoke dispenses from either both sides or directly from the front of the machine.

    • 2

If the smoke dispenses from the sides, point the smoke machine in the direction of the area you want the smoke and then place a battery-powered fan on the opposite side of the smoke machine and turn it on. This will cause the smoke to only dispense from the one side facing the area where you want the smoke to be.

    • 3

If the smoke dispenses from the front only and you can't point the machine to the left or the right, but only straight ahead, and the show requires that the smoke flows to the right or the left, point the smoke dispenser straight ahead directly in front of the area where you want the smoke to dispense. This should cause the smoke machine to be positioned perpendicular to the designated area.

    • 4

Place a battery-powered fan on either side of the smoke machine directly where the smoke dispenses. Place the battery-powered fan on the right if you want the smoke to flow to the left, or place it on the left if you want the smoke to flow to the right.
