How to Make a Lamp Post for a Stage

When putting on a stage production, the set used can set the tone for the performance and enhance the atmosphere. Instead of simply drawing scene elements such as a lamp post on a back drop, creating a three-dimensional version helps bring the action to life. A lamp post can be created using a variety of elements that you may already own or can find in an arts and crafts room.

Things You'll Need

  • Black, round, plastic planter
  • Utility knife
  • Black paint
  • Paint brush
  • Empty cardboard wrapping paper tube
  • Empty cardboard tissue box

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the circumference of an empty cardboard wrapping paper tube.

    • 2

Flip over a round, black, plastic planter and cut a hole in the center of the bottom that matches the circumference of the wrapping paper tube.

    • 3

Paint the outside of the cardboard wrapping paper tube black and allow it to dry completely.

    • 4

Turn an empty, rectangular tissue box so it stands on its long end. Cut out rectangles from each side of the tissue box, excluding the top and the bottom, leaving at least a 1-inch border of cardboard around each cutout. Cut a hole in the bottom of the tissue box that matches the measurements of the cardboard tube's circumference.

    • 5

Paint the exposed cardboard on the tissue box black to match the tube and allow it to dry completely.

    • 6

Insert an LED light into the inside of the box, making sure the light is larger than the round hole cut into the bottom so it does not fall out.

    • 7

Adhere wax paper onto the inside of each side of the box using double-sided tape so it covers the cutouts. The light should still glow visibly from behind the wax paper.

    • 8

Insert the bottom of the cardboard tube into the cutout on the bottom of the upside down planter. Insert the adapted tissue box onto the top of the cardboard tube. Place the homemade lamp post on the stage.
