How to Rig Theatrical Curtain Pulleys

A simple, three-pulley system is used to move theater curtains across the stage. This system is sometimes called a flying system or a theatrical rigging system. Theatrical rigging systems are used to move curtains, backdrops, props and even people or other heavy objects across the stage. Elaborate theatrical rigging systems can move people or objects up, down, across, diagonal or in a curved line of movement around or through a stage. A basic curtain pulley system, though, is more simple to set up and can be used to quickly create backdrops for various scenes in a play.

Instructions

    • 1

Attach a metal pulley to one end of a metal line wire block that spans the width of your stage and has been positioned safely in an elevated spot above the stage, along with the electrical rigging. Screw the pulley into the left end of the metal line wire block with two metal screws and a cordless drill.

    • 2

Screw two metal pulleys to the right end of the metal line wire block with metal screws and a cordless drill.

    • 3

Run one end of a long segment of rope through the bottom and top of the pulley on the left side of the metal line wire block. Attach a large wooden clothespin to the end of the rope so that it cannot fall down and out of the pulley.

    • 4

Thread the unknotted rope end across the stage and through the inside pulley facing the back of the stage on the right side of the metal line wire block. Let the rope fall down to within 10 to 12 inches of the stage floor.

    • 5

Loop the rope back up to the outside forward-facing pulley on the right side of the metal line wire block. Thread the rope through the forward facing pulley.

    • 6

Run the rope back towards the left side of the metal line wire block where the single pulley is located. Tie the end of the rope that you just ran across the stage to the right edge of a metal master carrier. Secure the end of the rope to the master carrier with a double knot.

    • 7

Unhook the clothespin from the left end of the rope and tie it to the left edge of the master carrier. Tie a double knot in the rope to secure it. Test the pulley system by standing on the right side of the stage and pulling on the rope. Watch to see that the master carrier moves from the left side of the metal line wire block to the right.

    • 8

Hook the leading edge of the curtain to the loop in the bottom of the master carrier. Hook the far left or dragging edge of the curtain to the far left edge of the metal line wire block securing it upright.
