Shawn Corey Carter began using the stage name "Jay-Z" in the late 1980s when he met Jaz-O, a rapper who was signed to Def Jam Recordings. Jaz-O gave Shawn Corey Carter the nickname "Jay-Z" after the last letter in his first name and the first letter in the name Jaz-O.
