Wear professional clothing. Do not show up at an audition wearing faded or ragged clothing. A pair of black pants and a nice shirt with dress shoes sends the message that you take your auditions seriously. Dressing professionally also shows your potential director that you not only took the time to dress nicely but that you put forth the effort to make an impression. Making a good first physical impression also helps a director make the right decision.
Leotards, dance shoes and movement-friendly attire allows you to showcase your dancing or movement abilities for plays that require a lot of physical activity or feature dance numbers. Wear attire that does not hinder your abilities. For example, if you are a dancer auditioning for a play that features quite a few dance numbers, you would not wear stiff or overly tight pants to your audition. Instead, you would wear a leotard and tights or comfortable dance pants that help highlight your abilities.
Wear a color that stands out. Color automatically draws attention to you. Choose a professional looking shirt in a bright color or a brightly colored dress. Bright, vibrant pieces help you individualize yourself from the crowd. However, avoid wearing too many bright colors or garish prints. Mismatching your outfit or wearing unfashionable clothes sends a bad impression.
Keep your attire and makeup natural. Do not wear clothing that makes you uncomfortable or does not fit you well. Avoid heavy makeup. Showcase your natural looks. This gives the director an opportunity to see what you really look like and whether or not your looks are what the production needs. Wear simple makeup such as a sheer foundation and lip gloss. Groom any facial hair and avoid scraggly beards or mustaches. Brush your hair neatly and keep it away from your face. Keep a comb with you for last-minute grooming.
