What are the respective roles of singer and piano in performing a Lied?

Singer

The singer is the primary performer in a Lied, providing the vocal expression of the text and music. The Lieder singer must have a highly developed vocal technique, including a strong and flexible voice, excellent intonation, and a keen sense of phrasing and musical interpretation. The singer must also have a deep understanding of the German language and be able to convey the meaning and emotions of the text through their singing.

Piano

The piano provides the musical accompaniment to the singer's voice, supporting the vocal line and adding harmonic, melodic, and rhythmic interest to the performance. The pianist must be an accomplished musician with a strong understanding of the musical style and structure of the Lied. The pianist must also be able to collaborate effectively with the singer, following their lead and providing a sensitive and supportive accompaniment.

In a Lied performance, the singer and pianist are equal partners in the creation of a musical work of art. The singer and pianist must work together closely, blending their voices and musical interpretations to create a unified and expressive performance.
