How to Make Puppets Walk and Run

Being able to make a puppet walk and run is a crucial skill for puppeteers. Puppets on stage don't just stand there. Rather, the puppeteer needs to be able to move the puppet across the stage as needed. Follow these steps to make puppets walk and run across a stage.

Instructions

    • 1

Place your arm inside of the puppet making sure that your elbow is slightly bent. Hold the puppet off the side of your body and then turn the puppet to the side so the puppet's profile faces the stage.

    • 2

Make your puppet walk across the stage. To do this, bounce or move your elbow up and down a few inches as you move the puppet forward across the stage. This bouncing motion will give the puppet a natural look while it walks across the stage. If you don't give the puppet this bouncing movement, the puppet will appear simply to glide across the stage instead of walking across the stage.

Speed up and increase your motions to make your puppet run across the stage. Start with the walking motion described in Step 2. However, to make the puppet run, move your elbow up and down more and move the puppet forward across the stage at a faster pace.

Learn how to make your puppet walk on or off a stage. Pretend that your puppet is walking up or down an imaginary set of steps to get on or off the stage. To walk your puppet down off a stage, move your elbow to bounce the puppet up and down as you move the puppet down gradually. To walk your puppet up onto a stage, move your elbow to bounce the puppet up and down as you move the puppet gradually up the imaginary steps.
