What is a foil in play?

In a play or other work of fiction, a foil is a character who highlights or sharpens the traits of another character. This term typically suggests a contrast between two characters, often of similar importance, as a complement or antithesis. Sometimes the terms "foil" and "counterfoil" are used interchangeably, but the term counterfoil commonly applies to a character that directly contradicts another.
