What role does Russell Crowe play in Gladiator?

Russell Crowe plays the role of Maximus Decimus Meridius, a Roman General who is betrayed by the Emperor Commodus and forced into slavery. He ultimately becomes a gladiator and seeks revenge against Commodus for the murder of his family and the usurpation of the throne.
