When did the first globe theatre open?
The first Globe Theatre opened in London in 1599. It was built by James Burbage and his sons, Richard and Cuthbert. The theatre was a circular wooden structure with a thatched roof. It could hold about 3,000 people. The Globe Theatre was the home of William Shakespeare's acting company, the Lord Chamberlain's Men. Shakespeare wrote many of his plays for the Globe Theatre, including Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, and Othello. The Globe Theatre was destroyed by fire in 1613. It was rebuilt in 1614, but it was closed by the Puritans in 1642. In 1997, a new Globe Theatre was built on the site of the original theatre.
