In the Globe Theatre what is yard?

In the Globe Theatre, the yard is the area of the theatre open to the sky, where the groundlings stood. It was the cheapest area of the theatre, and those who stood there were often referred to as "groundlings" or "penny stinkards." The yard was sometimes used for special effects, such as when a trap door was used to bring actors up from below the stage.
