The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill offers both graduate and undergraduate degrees in the dramatic arts. The University of North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem offers two undergraduate degrees in professional acting and directing. The curriculum at the School of the Arts emphasizes practical application over classroom learning, according to its website, and students in both degree programs learn the craft and technique of acting and directing rather than theater history. Brevard College, located in western North Carolina, offers bachelor of arts degrees in theater studies and theater education. Students take courses in acting, scene study, costume design, directing, playwriting, stagecraft and audition techniques. According to the school's website, the department sponsors a limited number of scholarships annually for selected theater students, and students may also apply for academic scholarships ranging from $3,000 to full tuition through the college's financial aid office.

Davidson College offers a theater arts education in a Christian-faith-based learning environment. The theater department sponsors several productions each semester, including two mainstage shows, two second-stage shows, a children's show and a student-directed studio series. All students may audition for these productions. During the summer months, theater students may participate in internships, fellowships and apprenticeships at locations across the country, including the Blowing Rock Stage Company in Blowing Rock, North Carolina, the Goodman Theater in Chicago and La Jolla Playhouse in California.
