Easy Cures for Stage Fright

Stage fright can be crippling. For children, it can put a serious damper on activities such as participating in a school play other public events. For adults, it can occur in the workplace, especially during presentations. Fortunately, there are some easy cures for stage fright you can use to ensure you shine the next time you must give a presentation or go up on stage.
  1. Preparation

    • Stage fright is often caused by the feeling that something will go wrong, like forgetting you lines during a play or losing your train of thought during a presentation to your coworkers. Erase this fear by being absolutely prepared. Practice what you must say or do repeatedly, so there is no doubt in your mind that you will be able to ace through it without tripping up. Then, take it a step further and ask a trusted friend or two to watch you perform or speak.

    Visualization

    • For some, the idea of having attention focused solely on them is the stage fright trigger. In such cases, visualization techniques may do the trick. Pretend that you are there alone, without anyone scrutinizing what you say or do. Alternately, put yourself somewhere else, like a park or other tranquil spot. Visualization takes practice, so do try this at home on your own, so that when you do it before a crowd, you are able to effectively visualize the crowd away or visualize yourself somewhere else.

    Relaxation Techniques

    • When you have an attack of stage fright, your entire body tenses up. Your heart rate increases and your body releases a rush of adrenaline, just as if you were in a dangerous situation. Combat this with relaxation techniques like breathing deeply and defocusing your eyes. Continue to do this, if possible, through your presentation to keep yourself in a relaxed state.

    Medication

    • Some people are especially prone to anxiety and even the thought of performing in public can send them into a sweaty, anxiety filled frenzy. When common cures for stage fright just won't do, it may be time to consider medication for anxiety, such as Xanax and Zoloft. Talk to your doctor about whether such medications are right for you, then make sure you take your medication in advance of the performance or presentation.
