Plug in a 500-watt halogen work light to get an idea of how much illumination it provides. It is very bright so don't look directly into it. Modify these lights to create the effects that you need.
Paint the inside of a floor register start collar with black spray paint to cut down on possible reflection. You can find one in a plumbing supply store or in any store that has heat and cooling equipment. Wait for the collar to dry before continuing.
Trim the rectangular end of the collar with metal snips to adjust it so it fits onto the end of the halogen light. It will help focus your light and give you more control over what area of the stage is lit. Use pliers to further bend the frame as needed so it forms a tight fit over the light.
Wrap the connection between the light and the collar with silver heat-resistant duct tape to give it a good seal.
Tape a light gel to the other end of the collar to diffuse the light and make it a particular color. Gels are sheets of heat-resistant film that feel like plastic. They come in various colors so you can create lighting effects.
Plug the modified light into a surge protector and a dimmer control system if you have access to one so you can control the brightness of the light at any given time while also protecting against overload.
Set up various lights in similar fashion around the stage to get the lighting appearance and effect you want. Tape down all cords to the ground for safety so no one trips. Add a timer to various lights if you want them to turn on or off at particular times without needing to do it manually.
