How did Oedipus bring the city of Thebes fortune in book Rex?

In Sophocles' play "Oedipus Rex", Oedipus did not initially bring fortune to the city of Thebes. In fact, when the play begins, Thebes is suffering from a plague because of an unknown, unresolved murder - that of King Laius, its previous ruler.
