What is a singspiel opera?

Singspiel is a type of opera that originated in Germany in the late 17th century. It is characterized by its use of spoken dialogue in between musical numbers, as well as its incorporation of German folk music and popular songs.

The first Singspiel was "Der Teufel ist los" (The Devil is Loose) by Johann Joseph Fux, which premiered in Vienna in 1699. Other notable Singspiels include "Bastien und Bastienne" (Bastien and Bastienne) by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and "Die Zauberflöte" (The Magic Flute) by Mozart and Emanuel Schikaneder.

Singspiel opera gained popularity in Europe during the 18th and 19th centuries, particularly in Austria and Germany. However, it eventually declined in popularity as German operas began to adopt more Italianate style and techniques. In modern times, it remains a minor genre.
