What is the history of Sydney Opera House?

1940s: Australian politician Ben Chifley proposed the construction of a national cultural center in Sydney.

1954-1956: An international competition was held for the design of the Sydney Opera House. Danish architect Jørn Utzon won the competition with his distinctive sail-like design.

1958-1963: Construction of the Sydney Opera House began.

1964-1966: Utzon resigned from the project due to disagreements over the design and cost of the project.

1966-1973: Peter Hall took over as the lead architect and completed the project.

1973: The Sydney Opera House was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II.

1981: The Sydney Opera House was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

2007-2016: The Sydney Opera House underwent a major renovation and refurbishment project, including the replacement of the sails.

Today, the Sydney Opera House is one of the most iconic buildings in the world and a major tourist destination in Australia.
