Who killed Orpheus?

Orpheus was killed by maenads, wild and ecstatic female followers of Dionysus, the god of wine and ecstasy. According to the myth, Orpheus's wife Eurydice died from snakebite and he went down to the Underworld to bring her back. He succeeded in charming Hades, the god of the Underworld, with his music and was allowed to take Eurydice back to the world of the living, on the condition that he should not look back at her until they had reached the surface of the earth. However, Orpheus lost his nerve and turned around to look at Eurydice before they had reached safety, and she vanished forever. In despair, Orpheus renounced the love of mortal women and devoted himself entirely to music and poetry. He traveled the world, singing about the beauty of nature, the power of love, and the mysteries of life and death. One day, he came across a group of Maenads who were celebrating the rites of Dionysus. They mistook Orpheus for the rival god Apollo, and in their frenzy, they tore him to pieces.
