The musical tells the story of a masked figure who terrorizes the Paris Opera House. He falls in love with a young soprano, Christine Daaé, and becomes obsessed with her. The Phantom kidnaps Christine and takes her to his lair beneath the opera house, where he trains her to be a great opera singer. Christine eventually escapes from the Phantom, but he returns on the night of her debut performance and threatens to kill her unless she agrees to marry him. Christine tricks the Phantom into revealing his true identity, and he is unmasked. The Phantom is defeated and disappears into the sewers beneath the opera house.
